Denver Summit Appoints Nick Cushing as Head Coach
In a move that has the soccer world buzzing, Nick Cushing, the former manager of Manchester City Women and NYC FC, has been named the head coach of the new NWSL team, Denver Summit FC. The team is gearing up for its debut season in 2026, marking an exciting expansion in the league.
Cushing, who led Manchester City to the English top-flight title in 2016, is set to start his new role immediately. His task? To prepare Denver Summit for their entry into the NWSL, a league that will expand to 16 teams by 2026, with Boston Legacy FC also joining the ranks.
The Denver club, which revealed its name and crest in July, is backed by notable investors, including Colorado’s own skiing legend Mikaela Shiffrin. They have ambitious plans, including a new 14,500-seat stadium slated for 2028.
During his tenure at Manchester City, Cushing secured six major trophies, including two Women’s FA Cups and three League Cups. After leaving in 2020, he joined NYC FC as an assistant coach, eventually becoming head coach in 2022. He returned to Manchester City as interim head coach in 2025, leading the team to a respectable fourth-place finish.
For Cushing, the opportunity to return to the U.S. with his family was a significant draw. He chose Denver over other offers from English clubs, eager to take on this new challenge.
Cushing expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “Denver Summit FC’s vision for a world-class soccer organization is truly inspiring. We have a dedicated fanbase, and our goal is to field a team that mirrors that passion. We aim to play an exciting, attacking style of soccer that will energize our fans and challenge our opponents. Our mission is to build a winning team and create an unforgettable experience for all of Colorado.”
Before Cushing’s appointment, Curt Johnson was named the club’s general manager. Johnson, formerly with North Carolina Courage, emphasized the importance of experience, saying, “To succeed from the start, we need individuals who have thrived in similar environments and have a track record of success. Nick brings unparalleled experience, a commitment to player development, and a tactical vision that will thrill Summit supporters. He’s the ideal leader to guide us into our inaugural season and beyond.”
