Villa sign Guessand, Taylor in at Liverpool, Championship kicks off: football news – live

We’re over an hour into the blog and are yet to provide an Alexander Isak update. Inevitably, Liverpool boss Arne Slot was asked about the Newcastle striker in his morning press conference but channeled his Tim de Leede and played it back to the bowler.

“As you know, from me and I think every manager works like this, you never talk about players that are not yours,” said Slot. “I can talk about Hugo [Ekitike], who we have signed and who has done really well until now.

Bristol City pull off major coup as Wales midfielder Sophie Ingle returns

  • 33-year-old back at the club after leaving Chelsea

  • Gareth Taylor confirmed as Liverpool head coach

Bristol City have signed the Wales midfielder Sophie Ingle on a free transfer in a move that takes her back to the club she first joined 11 years ago.

Ingle left the WSL champions Chelsea when her contract ended last season after a trophy-laden, seven-year spell in which she won five WSL titles, three Women’s FA Cups and two League Cups, and her move to the second-tier will be one of the highest-profile WSL 2 signings of the summer transfer window.

Football transfer rumours: Milan move for Højlund? Spurs target Paz?

Today’s rumours are preparing for a conversation

Farewell, Benjamin Sesko. The Slovene has been churned through the Mill but is finally moving past the tittle-tattle to something more concrete. He’s on the way to Manchester United, such a great, welcoming place in recent years for developing forwards. Godspeed. What does this mean for Newcastle, who were in for him too and are in dire need of anyone, anyone, to walk through the door? They continue to be linked with Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson and Brentford’s Yoane Wissa, while the Daily Mail says Wolves’ Jørgen Strand Larsen is in their thoughts, too.

Uncertainty lingers over their prized possession, Alexander Isak, denied the joys of the grill but, claims the Times, still desired by Liverpool – even after their £110m offer was rejected. With Sesko the new leading man at Old Trafford, Rasmus Højlund’s future comes into question; Milan could be the answer, potentially taking the former Atalanta striker back to Serie A. Chelsea are developing a habit for United wingers: Jadon Sancho on loan last year, Alejandro Garnacho this time round, with perhaps more permanence. The Argentinian international has apparently been given a price tag of £50m.

Misses, fall-outs and late goals: Darwin Núñez’s Liverpool ride was eventful one | Andy Hunter

Poised for a move to Al-Hilal, the striker will depart in the affections of many despite a hit and miss time at Anfield

It started with a goal to clinch the Community Shield against Manchester City on his Liverpool debut and a red card for a head-butt on his Anfield bow. There were glaring misses, falling-outs and some telling contributions in between, before it ended with Liverpool taking a rare financial hit on a one-time club record signing. Darwin Núñez never reached the heights Jürgen Klopp predicted he would, but it was an eventful three-year ride that ensures the striker is poised to depart in the affections of many at Liverpool.

Klopp led the signing of Núñez before and especially after his two appearances for Benfica against Liverpool in the 2021-22 Champions League. But he was not the only Liverpool coach to be sold on the Uruguay international’s talents, become frustrated by attempts to accommodate the forward and ultimately sideline him. Arne Slot followed an identical path with the mercurial 26-year-old.

‘We dressed an actress as Elsa from Frozen’: the inner workings of a transfer deal

A group of leading experts anonymously give the lowdown on how players are bought and sold, including the transfer market’s peculiar quirks

The whole system is lubricated by agents: how they work and how they make things work. At my club, we have closed the door to that now. We used to say we were open to what agents sent our way but in our experience only around one in 100 suggestions were useful, let alone successful.
