Xabi Alonso’s first steps as a coach: ‘He always knew what was going to happen’

Ahead of Alonso’s first season in charge of Real Madrid we speak to some of those he coached at Real Sociedad B

On 19 August Real Madrid start their new La Liga campaign at home against Osasuna with Xabi Alonso in charge for his first league game. That would have seemed unthinkable only three years ago when he had just taken over at Bayer Leverkusen.

He admitted thinking: “What am I doing here? … Why did we hire this guy from Real Sociedad B?” but the Bundesliga side knew what they were doing. Within two years he had taken them to a historic double as well as the Europa League final. The 2023-24 league title was secured by going undefeated. Last season they finished second behind Bayern Munich – no mean feat – and on 25 May he was confirmed as Carlo Ancelotti’s replacement as manager for Los Blancos.

Ex-Arsenal footballer Thomas Partey in court on rape and sexual assault charges

Partey, 32, has been charged with five counts of rape and one of sexual assault and faces trial later this year

The former Arsenal footballer Thomas Partey has appeared in court charged with six sexual offences.

The 32-year-old was bailed to appear at the Old Bailey for trial later this year over allegations of rape and sexual assault. During Tuesday’s brief hearing at Westminster magistrates court, he stood in the dock dressed all in black with his arms behind his back.

The European Cup winner bringing women’s football dream to Monaco

Former Italy striker Marco Simone has big hopes for new club Monaco United, even though they will start in the fifth tier

Women’s football in France has always been an important marker point in Europe, mainly through Lyon’s record-breaking Champions League success. The club have been pushed along domestically by Paris Saint-Germain but a shift is taking place, with Paris FC continuing to develop and Lens and Marseille promoted to the top division for the 2025-26 season.

One place lacking a professional team in the women’s pyramid is Monaco but that could change before long, and not necessarily through AS Monaco. Monaco United launch this season and although they will begin in the fifth tier, they are founded and coached by Marco Simone, a four-time Serie A winner and two-time Champions League winner as a player with Milan.
