The Championship is back, and it’s shaping up to be a rollercoaster of a season. With six fresh teams, 11 new managers, and a historic club like Sheffield Wednesday facing financial turmoil, the league promises drama from the get-go. Birmingham and Ipswich are set to kick off the season on Friday night, marking the start of 552 games. However, if Sheffield Wednesday’s owner, Dejphon Chansiri, doesn’t sell the club at a reasonable price, the number of matches could dwindle. For now, the Owls are hopeful of fielding a team against Leicester on Sunday, even if it means showing a bit more leg than usual. Fans would be relieved if their club simply avoids the bottom of the league, as it would mean they still have a team to support.
In yesterday’s Football Daily, Arsenal was said to have ‘won the square root of nish-all in five years.’ Allow me to remind you, along with 1,056 other pedants, of the men’s team’s triumphs in the Community Shield in 2020 and 2023. Let’s not forget the Arsenal women’s team, who clinched the League Cup twice and the Bigger Cup in 2024-25. Kudos to Nick Howarth Pulleyn for pointing this out.
Arsenal’s biggest obstacle to becoming champions is, well, Arsenal. William Blake’s words about ‘mind-forg’d manacles’ seem apt for the area between Drayton Park and Tollington Road, as noted by Rowan Sweeney.
Michael Gilsenan’s tribute to Son Heung-min was touching, but Phil Taverner suggests he could have penned a more enthusiastic ode to LA than Son’s own lukewarm effort. Meanwhile, Marc Meldrum points out that while Harry Kane scored 280 goals in 435 games for Spurs, Son Heung-min played 454 games, netting 173 goals. Kane’s 63 penalties make you wonder what Son’s tally might have been if he’d taken them.
As players switch clubs, we often ponder their fit in new environments. Anthony Stokes joining Conor McGregor’s Black Forge FC is a curious move, as noted by Gareth Aherne.
